Biography
1887 - Born in Buczacz, Galicia, present day Ukraine, son of Shalom Mordechai and Esther Czaczkes. Agnon reported of himself that he was born on Tisha B'Av 5648, 8.8.1888.

1904 – His first poem was published in Hebrew, "Little Hero."

1908 – He first arrived in the Land of Israel, resided in Jaffa in Neve Zedek. His story "Agunot" was published, the first publication which he signed by the name "Shai Agnon."

1909 – He meets with Haim Nachman Bialik and writers from the Second Aliya including Y.H. Brenner.

1912 – The novel "והיה העקוב למישור" is published in installments. Agnon leaves the Land of Israel en route to Berlin.

1915 – Agnon meets Shlomo Zalman Schocken in Berlin, who eventually becomes his patron and the publisher of his writing.

1919 – In the course of his work as a Hebrew teacher, Agnon meets Esther (Elsa) Marks, and the two fall in love to the displeasure of Esther's father, the banker Georg Marks, from Koenigsberg.

1920 – Marriage to Esther Marks in Berlin.

1921 – The year of birth of Emunah, the Agnon's eldest daughter, while the family was residing in the town of Bad Homburg, near Frankfurt.

1922 – The birth of the son, Shalom Mordechai, who was given the nickname "Hemdat" by his mother, which eventually became his official name.

1924 – A fire which broke out in the fabric store on the ground floor of the Agnon family residence destroyed the home completely with all of its contents and Agnon's library which approx. 4000 books, including manuscripts. After the fire, Agnon returns to the Land of Israel and resides in Jerusalem, near Ben Yehudah Street.

1925 – Esther takes the children to join their father in Jerusalem.

1927 – An earthquake in Jerusalem and Samaria causes major damages to the Agnon family home. The family is forced to leave the center of the city and Agnon chooses the Talpiyot neighborhood as his place of residence.

1929 – The riots of 1929 broke out, during which the residents of Talpiyot were injured – with damage to property and body. The Agnon home was looted and his books were mutilated and damaged.

1931 – The year in which Beit Agnon in Talpiyot was built. The writer lived in this house with his family for the rest of his life.

1935 – Agnon receives the Bialik Prize for the story "בלבב ימים."

1939 – The novel "A Guest Came to Stay" was published.

1945 – Agnon receives the Ussishkin Prize for the novel, "Temol Shilshom" (Yesterday and the Day Before).

1953 – An edition of "All of Agnon's Writing" was published in 7 volumes.

1954 – The Israel Prize for Literature is awarded to Shai Agnon.

1966 – Agnon is granted the Nobel Prize for Literature, together with the German writing Jewish poetess, Nelly Sachs.

1967 – An honorary doctorate from the Weizmann Institute of Science was awarded to Agnon.

1967 – Agnon returned to Israel from a visit to the United States in the middle of the Six Day War, and visited the Kotel and the Old City.

1970 – Agnon died at the Herzfeld Hospital in Gedera and was brought to rest at the Mt. of Olives with a state funeral.
